The problem

The old site had grown for years on a generic theme: deep sidebars, duplicated media, titles in capitals, and no way to find a parish.

What I did

Redesigned and rebuilt the site and its content model: parishes, priests and curia as structured data, a parish finder and map, a martyrs’ timeline, and a simpler editor for the diocese staff.

The result

576 texts migrated with 123+ redirects and 0 axe-core violations across 49 page types. Launching soon.

Built for parishioners, many of them older.

01 · navigation

No sidebars; sections become tabs

Each page shows its part of the menu as tabs across the top.

tradeoff: Less room for secondary links.
why: Deep sidebars hid content and doubled the navigation on phones.

02 · audience

Readable type and large targets

Research on older visitors led to larger text, bigger tap targets and a shorter homepage with news first.

tradeoff: Less fits above the fold.
why: The people who use the site most are the ones the old design served worst.

03 · editors

A smaller editor for non-technical staff

51 blocks kept, a guide on the Albanian dashboard, and comments switched off.

tradeoff: Fewer layout options for editors.
why: Staff publish weekly without a developer. Fewer choices means fewer broken pages.

04 · migration

Nothing lost in the move

Every old menu item is covered, 123+ redirects are in place, and an unknown address finds its closest match instead of a dead end.

tradeoff: Weeks spent on data, not design.
why: Years of letters, homilies and history are the archdiocese’s memory. Broken links would erase it.
