The problem
On the old site the address bar never changed: Back did nothing, refreshing lost your place, and every shared link opened Genesis 1.
What I did
Rebuilt the site end to end: reading experience, typography, search, study mode with parallel texts, reading plans, accounts and the editorial admin.
The result
All 73 books and 30,881 verses with real URLs, 8,493 footnotes, six reading plans and three interface languages.
A reading product first.
Every passage gets a real address
Each chapter and verse has its own URL, and the old links redirect to the right place.
- tradeoff
- A full routing and redirect layer to maintain.
- why
- People share verses. A shared link that opens the wrong book breaks the one thing a Bible site must do.
One “Aa” sheet instead of five icons
Five unlabeled 30px buttons became one 44px control. Every setting shows its name and current value; it is a bottom sheet on phones and a popover on desktop.
- tradeoff
- One extra tap to reach a setting.
- why
- Readers couldn’t tell what the icons did. Labels and larger targets matter more than saving a tap.
Headings stored as data, not guessed
Section headings are real data instead of being recovered with a fragile pattern.
- tradeoff
- A one-off import to clean the source text.
- why
- The old guesswork broke headings across books. Data is correct once and stays correct.
Contrast as a rule, not a check
Every colour pair stays above 4.5:1 and verse text is around 9:1, in light and dark.
- tradeoff
- A quieter palette.
- why
- Long reading on a phone, often outdoors or late at night, needs strong contrast more than mood.
Reading, study and habit.

One verse per line, set in a serif made for long reading.

Bookmark, text settings and study mode in one place.

A daily verse beside every chapter.

Each plan shows its length and where to start today.

Designed for reading on a phone.
